Our Story

We are the Beaulieu family.

Lucas, Brittany, Owen, and Ella.

We are originally from Ontario, in the Ottawa valley. Algonquin Provincial Park was our front yard and the beautiful Ottawa River was our backyard. We enjoyed spending as much time in nature as possible. Lucas worked full-time in the Mechanical Engineering field at a nuclear plant, Brittany worked part-time, and our two children were in school. Our conflicting schedules often left us with very little time to spend together as a family and we wondered if it would ever be possible to change that.

Then one day some friends asked if we had ever considered working for ourselves, teaching English as a second language. We did a bit more research, pursued our degrees in education, and a short time later Lucas resigned from his job. We sold our house, homeschooled the children, and traveled together as a family, spending a few years in Central America. We were happy spending more time together as a family and volunteering much of our time to help the community.

It was during this time we discovered our children had some health conditions that affected (amongst other things) their skin. They would constantly have rashes and cracked, dry, itchy skin, something they had always struggled with but which now seemed worse. After many months of trying to determine the main contributing factors to their flare-ups, we learned the tropical climate was a challenge for them as they couldn’t expel moisture properly, and most soaps and shampoos we would buy that included chemicals or synthetics in their ingredients would only magnify their problem. After trying many different “natural” soaps (some of which helped) we decided to try making our own. As we saw the benefits that our natural homemade soaps had on our family, we started thinking about how we could help others while at the same time supporting the family financially. It was also at this time that we started making plans to move back to a climate that would be better for the children.

Being nature lovers at heart and having visited Newfoundland about 10 years ago when our son was a toddler, we decided to research living in Newfoundland and decided to settle in beautiful Rocky Harbour, in the heart of Gros Morne National Park on the west coast. The wonderful culture, beautiful surroundings, and friendly people really drew us to the area. After visiting, we knew this was the place for us. The wide variety of artisan crafts inspired us to start our own little business. We decided to try turning our hobby of woodworking and soap making into a small home-based business.

Our family name, Beaulieu, when translated from French means “Beautiful Place”. The beauty here on the west coast of Newfoundland inspired our business name, as it truly is a beautiful place.

All of our products are designed and hand crafted in house by Lucas and Brittany, and are meant to reflect the beauty that surrounds us. They are produced in such a way as to minimize any negative impact on the environment. Our business motto is “Let’s keep it a beautiful place”. We strive to use only natural, eco-friendly, and biodegradable products in our wood products. Our soaps are made from only high quality natural oils and essential oils, are vegan and biodegradable, and are registered with Health Canada.

We are confident you will enjoy our products as much as we do. Please browse our site and contact us with any questions you may have. We’re more than happy to help and will try our best to accommodate any custom requests you may have.
